What Is Functional Medicine
An honest explanation, including the fair criticisms of the field.

Functional medicine focuses on finding the cause behind symptoms. It is not an alternative to conventional medicine; it is a different way of ordering the investigation.
The question of what is functional medicine has a short answer: it is a way of ordering an investigation that focuses on the cause behind symptoms rather than the diagnostic label alone. It is not alternative medicine and it is not traditional medicine. The doctors practising it remain registered doctors using the same laboratories and the same drugs.

What is functional medicine compared with conventional care
Conventional medicine is excellent at what it was built for: acute conditions, emergencies, surgery, and diseases with clear protocols. If you break a leg or develop a serious infection, that is where you should go. A functional approach helps more with chronic conditions that develop slowly, where symptoms already exist although they do not yet meet the criteria for a full diagnosis.
What is functional medicine in practice
Someone arrives with fatigue. The usual approach checks haemoglobin and thyroid, and if both read normal, the conclusion is that nothing is wrong. A functional approach looks wider: ferritin even when haemoglobin is normal, vitamin D, morning cortisol, fasting insulin, sleep quality and eating patterns. Sometimes the answer is a ferritin of 15, technically inside the range although far too low for good energy.
What it is not
- It is not a licence to ignore clinical evidence
- It is not a method for selling as many supplements as possible
- It does not treat cancer, severe autoimmune disease, or emergencies
- It does not replace a specialist when referral is needed
The fair criticisms
The field has real problems worth admitting. Some practitioners order expensive panels without solid evidence that the results change any treatment decision. Others sell long supplement lists based on unvalidated tests. So here is how to tell the serious from the rest: ask what this test result will change in my plan. If the answer is vague, the test probably is not needed. Read our editorial standards.
How we practise it
Every test we suggest must answer that question. Every plan carries a review date. If nothing measurable has changed by then, we change the plan rather than continuing while adding more supplements. Frequently Asked
Is functional medicine alternative medicine?
No. The doctors practising it are registered doctors using the same laboratories and the same drugs.
Can it replace a specialist?
No. For acute conditions, emergencies and diseases with clear protocols, conventional care comes first.
Why so many tests?
Not necessarily many. Every test must answer one question: what will this result change in my plan?
