Quick Answer

The usual target is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of target body weight, spread evenly, which is roughly 25 to 40 grams at each main meal.

Protein is one of the three things we push hardest for almost every patient who is losing weight, and it is also the part most often missing. The problem is not that people do not know protein matters. The problem is that the protein sources common in a Malaysian diet usually give less than people assume.

How much you actually need

For an adult who is losing weight, the target commonly used is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of target body weight, spread evenly across the day. For most people that means twenty five to forty grams at each main meal. What matters is not only the daily total but the distribution. A breakfast with almost no protein is hard to make up for by night.

Common protein sources, and what they give

The figures below are rough estimates for a normal serving, not precise measurements.

  • A palm sized piece of chicken breast, around twenty five to thirty grams
  • One medium ikan kembung, around twenty grams
  • Two eggs, around twelve grams
  • A 500ml glass of unsweetened soy milk, around fifteen to eighteen grams
  • One tub of Greek yogurt, around fifteen grams
  • A bowl of dal, around ten to twelve grams
  • A palm sized piece of tempe, around eighteen grams

Why a typical breakfast usually fails

Nasi lemak without egg or chicken gives very little protein. Plain roti canai gives almost none. Packet mee goreng is low as well. This is not a reason to stop eating local food. It is a reason to add one thing: an egg, chicken, fish, or a glass of soy milk beside it. One small addition in the morning changes how hungry you feel through the afternoon more than any other single change.

Protein during medical treatment

For anyone under treatment, protein is not an optional extra. When food intake drops, the body takes part of its energy from muscle if protein is inadequate and there is no resistance training. Muscle lost this way does not come back on its own when treatment ends. Read keeping muscle while losing weight.

Do you need a supplement

Not necessarily. Supplements help if you cannot reach the target through food, particularly on busy workdays or after treatment that reduces appetite. But they are not a requirement. Most people reach the target by adding one protein source to each meal. If there is kidney or liver disease, the protein target is set by your doctor rather than followed from the internet.

The easiest way to start

Do not count everything. Pick one meal a day, usually breakfast, and make sure it contains a clear protein source. Hold that for two weeks before adding a second. Changes that last arrive one at a time, not all at once.

Next step

If you are not sure what protein target suits your weight and health, that is set during the assessment. Book a consultation, or read the weight management guide.

Frequently Asked

How many grams of protein a day?

The usual target is 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of target body weight, spread evenly, which is roughly 25 to 40 grams at each main meal.

Do I need a protein supplement?

Not necessarily. It helps when the target is hard to reach through food, but most people get there by adding one protein source to each meal.

Why does a typical breakfast fall short?

Nasi lemak without egg or chicken, plain roti canai and packet mee goreng are all low in protein, so hunger arrives by mid morning.

Does protein matter more during medical weight treatment?

Yes. When food intake drops, the body draws energy from muscle unless protein is adequate and resistance training is in place.

Is there a reason to set protein lower?

Kidney or liver disease changes the target, and in that case the number is set by your doctor, not taken from the internet.
