EMS Training
Electrical muscle stimulation training at I-City Shah Alam, started at low intensity with limited frequency.
An electrode suit delivers impulses that contract the muscle while you move. Effective, but early intensity has to be controlled because the rhabdomyolysis risk is real.

Who this is for
EMS training works, and it is also the one modality here with a real risk if intensity is raised too fast. It suits limited training time, joint limits that make conventional resistance training difficult, or a return to training after a period of inactivity. Sessions are short because the work per minute is high.
- Limited training time and a preference for short sessions
- Difficulty with conventional resistance training because of joint limits
- Returning to training after a period of inactivity
- Already training and wanting an additional monitored stimulus
How it runs
Implanted devices, cardiac history, epilepsy, recent surgery and pregnancy are checked before a first session. That first session runs at low intensity, and frequency is limited early on.

Testing usually done first
Not every test here is ordered for everyone. The consultation decides which are needed.

What we claim and what we do not
| Claim | Our position |
|---|---|
| Replaces resistance training entirely | Not claimed. For most people a well-programmed conventional plan delivers comparable results. |
| 20 minutes equals hours in the gym | Not claimed. That figure comes from marketing, not from research. |
| Burns fat in specific areas | Not claimed. Spot fat reduction does not happen. |
| Adds strength, particularly in less trained people | The evidence supports this, provided intensity is controlled. |
Limits and who this does not suit
A first session that is too hard can cause severe muscle breakdown, known as rhabdomyolysis. This is not theoretical. It is reported in the medical literature, particularly in enthusiastic beginners.
- A pacemaker or implanted electronic device, pregnancy, epilepsy, serious heart disease, fever or active infection, recent surgery and a hernia at an electrode site are all reasons not to proceed. Unusually severe soreness or dark urine after a session needs prompt assessment.
Common questions
What signs should I take seriously after a session?
Unusually severe muscle soreness, or urine that turns dark. That is a case for prompt assessment rather than something to push through.
Can I do it straight after other heavy training?
No. Sessions are not run straight after other heavy training, and water is taken before and after.
Is 20 minutes really equal to hours in the gym?
Not claimed. That figure comes from marketing, not from research. For most people a well-programmed conventional plan delivers comparable results.
Where do sessions run?
At iLIV Lifesciences, I-City Shah Alam. See exercise prescription if you want a conventional programme first.
