Metabolic Assessment at iLIV Clinic Damansara Perdana
Quick Answer

A metabolic assessment measures how your body handles sugar and fat, not just how much you weigh.

A metabolic assessment measures how your body handles sugar and fat, rather than simply how much you weigh. Two people at the same weight can return very different results, and that difference is what sets long-term risk.

What a metabolic assessment measures

  • Fasting glucose and HbA1ccurrent and three-month average sugar
  • Fasting insulin and HOMA-IRhow hard your body works to stay normal
  • Lipid profiletriglycerides, HDL, LDL
  • hs-CRPlow-grade inflammation
  • Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio

The panel covers fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, a lipid profile and a basic inflammation marker. Together these numbers show how responsive your body still is to insulin. That is what shifts earliest, often years before anyone diagnoses type two diabetes.

Who this test suits

  • Weight climbing, especially around the middle
  • Tired after meals, or drowsy mid-afternoon
  • A fasting glucose reading once reported as borderline
  • Family history of type two diabetes
  • Women with PCOS or a history of gestational diabetes

How we run it

We take a blood sample after an eight to twelve hour fast. Plain water is fine. We send the full instructions when you book rather than on the day you arrive. Some cases need an oral glucose tolerance test, where we draw before and two hours after a glucose drink. The doctor decides whether that is needed after seeing your baseline results.

Interpretation

How we read a metabolic assessment

Fasting insulin often tells us more than fasting glucose, because insulin rises first to hold blood sugar inside the normal range. Someone can have a fasting glucose of 5.2 that looks fine, although a high fasting insulin shows the pancreas is working hard to reach it. So reading both together reveals the real pattern.

What it cannot do

Limits

No single test gives a complete answer. We read results alongside your clinical history and related tests such as body composition and hormone profile. Eligibility for any treatment is decided after consultation. Also read the weight and metabolic health pathway. Diagnostic criteria follow the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Book a consultation.

Frequently Asked

How is this different from a normal blood test?

A normal test measures glucose. This adds fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, which catch the problem earlier.

How long must I fast?

Eight to twelve hours. Plain water is allowed.

How often should I repeat it?

Every three to six months while on a programme, or once a year as routine screening.
