BMI Calculator
Work out your BMI using the Asian cut-offs applied in Malaysia, 23 and 27.5.

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. In Malaysia the healthy range ends at 22.9 and the obese range begins at 27.5.
This BMI calculator uses the cut-offs that Malaysia actually applies. The healthy range ends at 22.9 and the obese range starts at 27.5, rather than 24.9 and 29.9 as on international charts. So if a calculator elsewhere gave you a more reassuring answer, that is why.

How to work out BMI by hand
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, someone weighing 72 kg at 1.68 m gets 72 divided by 2.82, which is 25.5. On the international chart that reads as merely overweight. Against the Asian cut-offs, however, it already sits in the range that warrants attention.
Why this BMI calculator uses lower cut-offs
Metabolic risk in Asian populations climbs at a lower BMI than in European populations, partly because fat gathers more around the internal organs. Therefore the healthy range ends at 22.9 rather than 24.9.
What to do after the BMI calculator
Measure your waist at navel level, after breathing out normally. Over 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women flags visceral fat, whatever your BMI says. If both numbers sit outside range, or if symptoms such as post-meal fatigue show up, then a body composition test shows how much of that weight is actually fat. Next, try the daily calorie calculator, or read the Bahasa Melayu guide.
When BMI misleads
Two groups get misleading readings. First, people who train with resistance regularly, since muscle is denser than fat and lifts BMI although risk stays low. Second, older adults who have lost muscle, whose BMI can look normal while body fat already runs high. In both cases, waist measurement and body composition tell a more honest story.
BMI for children and older adults
BMI works differently for children. You have to compare the same number against age and sex percentile charts rather than adult ranges, because body composition shifts throughout growth. For older adults, meanwhile, a slightly higher BMI sometimes tracks with better outcomes. The Ministry of Health Malaysia publishes the Asian cut-offs we use. Book a consultation.
Frequently Asked
How do I calculate BMI?
Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. 72 kg at 1.68 m gives 25.5.
Why are Malaysian BMI ranges different?
Metabolic risk rises at a lower BMI in Asian populations, so the healthy range ends at 22.9.
My BMI is normal but my waist is large. Is that a problem?
Yes. A waist over 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women indicates visceral fat even at a normal BMI.
